Lachoneus¹

Lachoneus assumed the pivotal role of chief judge and governor over the Nephite people at the onset of a new era, approximately concurrent with the birth of Jesus Christ in the Old World (3 Nephi 1:1). His tenure, while marked by a series of religious affirmations and declines among the Nephites, is most noted for his stalwart leadership during times of intense national crisis. One of his most significant challenges arose when the Nephite nation confronted the growing menace of the Gadianton robbers, an outlaw band that had become a grave threat to the peace and stability of the land.

In the year AD 16, Lachoneus received a menacing letter from Giddianhi, the leader of the robbers, calling for an unconditional surrender of Nephite lands, property, and peoples (3 Nephi 3:1-10). Undeterred by Giddianhi’s audacity and the peril his demands represented, Lachoneus responded with strategic decisiveness and faith. He was neither frightened nor swayed by the extortionist tactics of the robbers, opting instead to rally his people to turn to the Lord for strength and fortitude (3 Nephi 3:12). His call to the people was both practical and spiritual: he commanded them to gather together in a single fortified region, to amass provisions, to build formidable fortifications, and to place themselves in God’s protection through repentance and prayer (3 Nephi 3:13-16).

Moreover, Lachoneus appointed capable military leaders, such as Gidgiddoni—a man revered for his prophetic gifts—to oversee the protection of the populace (3 Nephi 3:17). The inspiring words and profound prophecies of Lachoneus instilled a sense of urgency and fear in the Nephites, impelling them to follow his instructions with full force (3 Nephi 3:16). The crowning result of his leadership was evident in the successful repulsion of the Gadianton robbers and the subsequent peace established throughout the Nephite lands (3 Nephi 6:6).

The legacy of Lachoneus was one of justice, prophecy, and firm governance, characteristics that guided the Nephites through some of their most tumultuous times. Upon completing his service, Lachoneus was succeeded by his son, also named Lachoneus, who followed in his footsteps as a governor of the people (3 Nephi 6:19).
