Reckoning of Time

Reckoning of Time is the counting of years and months from stated events and periods of rule. Mosiah began to reign “in the thirtieth year of his age,” about four hundred and seventy-six years from the time Lehi left Jerusalem (Mosiah 6:4). In the year Lachoneus was chief judge and governor, “the ninety and first year had passed away” and it was six hundred years from the time Lehi left Jerusalem (3 Nephi 1:1).

The reign of the judges commenced throughout Zarahemla, and Alma was “the first and chief judge” (Mosiah 29:44). One speaker placed events “even until the fourth day of this seventh month, which is in the tenth year of the reign of the judges” (Alma 10:6).

The twenty and fifth year of the reign of the judges ended, along with “the days of Amalickiah” (Alma 51:37). In the twenty and sixth year, the Lamanites awoke “on the first morning of the first month” and found Amalickiah dead (Alma 52:1). The Nephites “began to reckon their time from this period when the sign was given, or from the coming of Christ” (3 Nephi 2:8).
