Shez²

Shez was a figure in the Jaredite record mentioned briefly in the Book of Mormon. He was the eldest son of a king also named Shez, who reigned in righteousness and prosperity. Shez, however, chose a different path from that of his father, rebelling against him. The precise nature of this rebellion is not detailed, but its consequence is clear. Shez’s affluent state, described as having “exceeding riches,” made him a target for others, and ultimately he was slain by the hand of a robber. This untimely demise brought an end to his rebellion and, paradoxically, resulted in peace for his father (Ether 10:3). The account of Shez serves as a narrative hinge in the Book of Mormon, quietly instructing on the perils of riches and the vulnerability that may accompany them.
