Jonas, identified in the Book of Mormon as the son of Nephi, was one of the twelve disciples chosen by Jesus Christ during His post-resurrection ministry in the Promised Land. He is acknowledged in the record alongside his fellow disciples selected by the Savior to establish and guide His church among the Nephite people. Jonas, along with his brother Timothy and others, was set apart and given the authority to teach, baptize and lead the inhabitants in the ways of the gospel. The scriptures note his presence at significant events where the gathered multitude experienced the teachings and miracles of the resurrected Lord (3 Nephi 19:4). Jonas, like the other disciples, would have played a pivotal role in ministering to the Nephites, teaching them the doctrine of Christ, and shepherding the church through a transformative period in its history.
