Jareds Bruder

The brother of Jared, also known as Mahonri Moriancumer as revealed by the Prophet Joseph Smith, was a significant figure in early Jaredite history, particularly noted for his unwavering faith and direct interactions with the Lord (Ether 3:6-20). His physical stature was described as that of “a large and mighty man” and one who found great favor with the Lord (Ether 1:34). He played a key role in preserving the language of Jared’s family and friends during the time of the confounding of languages at the Tower of Babel. His fervent prayers led to the Lord’s compassion upon their group, promising to lead them to a choice land and make of them a great nation (Ether 1:34-43).

The brother of Jared’s faith was particularly demonstrated when called upon to solve the problem of providing light in the sealed barges built for their oceanic voyage. His solution, to present the Lord with sixteen clear stones and asking Him to touch them to give light, was accepted, leading to a profound theophany where the brother of Jared was allowed to behold the finger of the Lord, and consequently, the Lord revealed Himself fully to the prophet (Ether 3:1-20). This experience signified an unparalleled level of faith and became a cornerstone story illustrating the power of faith in God’s willingness to reveal hidden truths and provide miraculous aid.

During the journey to the promised land, the brother of Jared was chastened by the Lord for his neglect in prayer, a poignant reminder of the importance of continual communication with the divine (Ether 2:14). Despite this, his faith did not wane, and after being forgiven, he led his people across the ocean, where they arrived after a journey lasting 344 days (Ether 6:11).

The brother of Jared was also known to be a mighty writer. His records, written in a language that had been confounded, were sealed up with two stones that were to act as interpreters for their translation at the appropriate time determined by the Lord (Ether 3:22-27). These writings, which included a remarkable vision of the history of the earth and its inhabitants, were to remain hidden to the world until after Christ’s resurrection (Ether 3:21-28; 4:1-2).

Ultimately, the brother of Jared fathered twenty-two sons and daughters, leaving a lasting legacy through his lineage as well as his prophetic writings (Ether 6:20). His death is succinctly noted in the record, closing the chapter on his life after his arrival in the promised land (Ether 6:29). His admonishment against the desire for kings would echo as a prophecy throughout Jaredite history, warning against the turn to captivity that leadership might engender (Ether 6:23). His life’s account, his legacy of faith, and the revelations he received contribute to the profound testimonies in the Book of Mormon of devotion to the Lord and the Lord’s responsiveness to His children’s faith.
