Emer

Emer, the son of Omer and a descendant of Jared, was anointed as king over the Jaredites during his father’s lifetime (Ether 9:14) and reigned for approximately sixty-two years. Throughout his reign, he was celebrated for his righteous administration, as he executed judgment with equity and righteousness (Ether 9:21). His commitment to justice coincided with a period marked by divine favor and the lifting of a curse from the land, ushering in an era of prosperity and strength for his people (Ether 9:16).

Under Emer’s leadership, the Jaredites experienced exceptional growth in both population and wealth, which could be attributed to their collective adherence to divine commandments regarding the stewardship of the promised land. The Scriptures highlight that Emer not only led a prosperous and strong nation but also enjoyed a close relationship with the divine, even witnessing a vision of the Son of Righteousness (Ether 9:22). This profound spiritual experience contributed to a legacy of peace and fulfillment in his rule.

Emer’s personal life was marked by the succession of his lineage; he fathered many sons and daughters, among whom was Coriantum, whom he anointed to be king following his own example of righteous judgment (Ether 9:21). Continuity of righteousness in governance was assured as Emer passed on the mantle to Coriantum, thereby ensuring a line of just rulers. Emer’s days concluded in serenity, as he died in peace after a reign characterized by both temporal and spiritual success (Ether 9:22).
