Korianton

Corianton was a son of Alma the Younger, the Nephite prophet, and is known for his mission among the Zoramites and his subsequent fall and redemption. Around 74 BC, Corianton accompanied his father Alma and his older brother Shiblon, along with other notable Nephites including Ammon, Aaron, Omner, Amulek, and Zeezrom, on a missionary journey to the Zoramites in Antionum (Alma 31:6-8). During this time, while his companions displayed spiritual steadfastness, Corianton was led away by his passions and pursued a harlot named Isabel, which led to dire consequences on their mission, causing the Zoramites to reject Alma’s teachings (Alma 39:3-11).

Alma, concerned for his son’s spiritual welfare, instructed Corianton in a series of discussions covering the resurrection, the state of the soul after death, the justice of God, the Atonement, and the importance of chastity (Alma 39-42). Corianton’s questions and doubts about these doctrines were addressed, which reflects the kind of challenges individuals faced at the time, as well as in later periods. Alma urged him to repent and to serve with diligence and faithfulness as he had been entrusted to do.

Following his father’s counsel, Corianton repented and rejoined the work of the ministry, exemplifying dedication and rectitude in his service. As a consequence of his renewed efforts, he became recognized among the leaders of the Nephite Church, contributing to the spiritual welfare of the people alongside his brother Shiblon and others who had been ordained to preach the word of God (Alma 49:30).

Lastly, the record suggests that Corianton continued in service to his people, for he sailed to the northern lands to provide provisions to Nephites who had migrated in that direction, although details of his later life are not furnished in the text (Alma 63:10). Corianton’s story serves as an instructive narrative on the themes of personal apostasy, repentance, forgiveness, and the enduring power of the Atonement.
