Tongs are an implement used to take an object from an altar. One of the seraphim flew to Nephi “having a live coal in his hand,” which he had taken “with the tongs from off the altar” (2 Nephi 16:6).
The seraph brought the live coal after taking it from the altar with the tongs (2 Nephi 16:6).
