Migration and Colonization

Migration and Colonization are the departure, travel, and settlement of groups in named lands. Mosiah fled from the land of Nephi with those who would hearken, and they traveled through the wilderness until they reached Zarahemla. They were “led by many preachings and prophesyings” during the journey (Omni 1:12-13).

Zeniff “collected as many as were desirous to go up to possess the land” of their fathers’ inheritance and started into the wilderness (Mosiah 9:1-3). The king covenanted that Zeniff might possess Lehi-Nephi and Shilom (Mosiah 9:6-8).

The people gave the land of Jershon to their brethren “for an inheritance,” with armies set between Jershon and the land of Nephi (Alma 27:22-24). The people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi went down into Jershon, “took possession of the land of Jershon,” and were called the people of Ammon by the Nephites (Alma 27:25-26).
